I
found the Mattapan Friends Association site by accident and it
brought back a flood of memories. It's great to see so many folks
in the photo section. I didn't know there were so many former
Mattapan residents who got together.
Several years ago, I took my kids on a drive-through tour of Mattapan.
We drove in from Milton up the Avenue, down Almont, and Alabama
Street (where I grew up). The nostalgia I had anticipated was
not there; only the anger and saddness of seeing what happened
to a once proud community. Alabama was barely passable with dumpsters
overflowing trash into the street. One of my boys turned to the
others and said "Dad grew up in the hood." It was difficult
to explain what happened and still be politically correct. It
was much easier to explain what Mattapan once was - a real neighborhood.
It
was great to find this website and to see that the "neighborhood"
still exists in the people that used to live there.
I
look forward to seeing old friends at the 2007 reunion. Al Cusher
